Dec. 14 Webinar to Showcase Locally Adapted Strategies for Diversifying Teacher Pipeline

Next month, AACTE will host the second installment of a webinar series highlighting the experiences and findings of each of the 10 institutions in the AACTE Black and Hispanic/Latino Male Teachers Initiative Networked Improvement Community (NIC). The webinar, “Diversifying the Teacher Pipeline at Florida Atlantic University and the University of St. Thomas: Lessons From AACTE’s NIC,” will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2:30-3:30 p.m. EST.

The goal of this NIC is to identify broadly applicable strategies to increase the percentage of Black and Hispanic/Latino men receiving initial teaching certification through educator preparation programs. This webinar will provide an inside look at the path of inquiry guiding the NIC’s overall work and how that process has shaped and changed recruitment and retention of Black, Hispanic, and Latino male teacher candidates at two participating institutions.

Presenters will share and discuss various aspects of their work, including –

  • The impact of the NIC process on recruitment and retention practice as applied to local contexts for implementation on their campus
  • Challenges and successes they encountered as they worked to implement NIC-inspired approaches
  • Feedback from their teacher candidates and partners about how changes in recruitment and retention practice on their campus have influenced teacher candidate outcomes
  • Suggestions for additional areas of research and change based on their work

My colleague Omar Davis and I will facilitate the webinar, joined by the following NIC participants:

  • Nanette Missaghi, Director, Collaborative Urban Educator Program, University of St. Thomas (MN)
  • Patricia Heydet-Kirsch, Assistant Dean, Accreditation and Assessment, Florida Atlantic University
  • Ea Porter, Enrollment Adviser, University of St. Thomas

Remaining webinars in the series are planned for early 2017 and will feature the remaining five NIC institutions: Boston University; the University of Arkansas, Little Rock; William Paterson University (NJ); California State University, Fullerton; and Northeastern Illinois University. Each institution’s story will also be shared as a case study in a theoretical framework paper being developed for release in 2017.

Register here to join us December 14.

Wondering what you missed in the first webinar, which was held October 20 and featured MidAmerica Nazarene University, the University of Connecticut, and Western Kentucky University? You can find its recording and PowerPoint slides here.
