Marilyn Cochran-Smith to Speak at AACTE Opening Session
AACTE is pleased to announce that social justice champion Marilyn Cochran-Smith will speak at the Opening Session of the 71st AACTE Annual Meeting. The session will take place at the Kentucky International Convention Center on February 22, 2019.
A teacher education scholar and practitioner for more than 40 years, Cochran-Smith is the Cawthorne Professor of Teacher Education for Urban Schools in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College (MA). She is widely known around the world for her scholarship on teacher education research, practice and policy and for her sustained commitment to inquiry-based teaching and diversity and equity in teacher education.
Cochran-Smith is currently the principal investigator for a Spencer-Foundation funded research project about teacher preparation at “new graduate schools of education” and the leader of Project TEER (Teacher Education and Education Reform), which explores the impact and implications of the education reform movement on teacher education practice and policy. She is also a lead member of Project RITE (Rethinking Initial Teacher Education for Equity), a two-country research team of teacher education practitioners and researchers at the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Education and Social Work in Auckland, New Zealand and Boston College’s Lynch School of Education.
She has received several AACTE awards for her professional achievements, including the 2011 David C. Imig Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teacher Education, 2006 Award for Best Publication on Teaching and Teacher Education, 2004 Edward C. Pomeroy Award, 1999 AACTE Award for Outstanding Research in the Field of Teacher Education, and 1995 Award for Excellence in Professional Writing in Teaching and Teacher Education. From 2000-2006, she served as the chief editor of AACTE’s Journal of Teacher Education.
In April 2018, Cochran-Smith published her latest book, Reclaiming Accountability in Teacher Education, where she and her colleagues argue that it is time for teacher educators to reclaim accountability by adopting a new approach that features intelligent professional responsibility, challenges the structures and processes that reproduce inequity, and sustains multi-layered collaboration with diverse communities. The publication was named a “Critics Choice” book for 2018 by the American Educational Studies Association. She has written ten books, seven of which have won national awards and recognitions, and more than 200 articles, handbook chapters, chapters in edited books, and editorials on social justice, practitioner research, and teacher education research, practice and policy.
During the Opening Session, Cochran-Smith will participate in a lively discussion on alternative views around accountability and professional responsibility in teacher education. Her comments will address the overall Annual Meeting theme of “Sustaining and Advancing the Profession” by reaffirming the value of educators and their collective work in a relevant and vibrant profession, and through the building of a teaching core that is fundamental to sustaining an educated citizenry. Throughout the conference, participants will have opportunities to discuss research, share innovations, and develop action plans with presenters from around the country. Details regarding AACTE-sponsored sessions at the Annual Meeting, as well as accepted proposals from AACTE’s membership and affiliate partners, will be available beginning next month.
