Call for Stories: Share Your Strategies to Address DEI

AACTE’s annual Washington Week is going virtual and we are excited to expand the advocacy campaign from a week to a month! This September will be filled with advocacy events that are sure to engage Members of Congress and their staff. Given the national climate, AACTE would like to elevate your invaluable work in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the midst of the many challenges we are all facing in 2020.

At this year’s Day on the Hill event, we will provide our Members of Congress with a “handbook” comprised of collected strategies by our members, describing their successes at their educator preparation programs (EPPs) in pursuit of diversity, equity and inclusion.

AACTE is seeking short, illustrative strategies describing your efforts in two areas:

  1. Faculty/Staff Professional Development

This strand embraces strategies that support faculty and staff professional development in the areas of culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy and practices. Examples of these strategies may include, but are not limited to, supporting faculty in incorporating culturally responsive and sustaining practices in the development and execution of coursework, encouraging faculty and staff participation in anti-racist professional development, self-assessment, and self-interrogation.

  1. Recruitment and Retention of Diverse Educators

Research increasingly shows that all students benefit from having a diverse educator, yet the educator workforce remains overwhelmingly White. This strand encourages strategies that support the recruitment and retention of a racially and ethnically diverse educator candidate pool. These strategies may include, but are not limited to, Grow Your Own programs to reach more racially diverse candidates, financial incentives to reduce the barriers to entry and completion of educator preparation programs, and inclusive approaches to demonstrating competencies for entry and completion.

Members of Congress will appreciate hearing what you, their constituents, are doing around the country to promote the diversification of the educator workforce through inclusive, equitable approaches.

Please submit your strategies here that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by August 14, 2020 at 11:59 p.m.
