Webinar to Discuss Preparing Principals to Partner With Legal, Social Services
On Wednesday, March 21, AACTE will host a free webinar on principal leadership, supported by The Wallace Foundation as part of the Association’s ongoing partnership to disseminate the latest research and practice innovations in principal preparation. Please join us from 3:00-3:45 p.m. EDT for Leveraging Community Resources to Strengthen Clinical Practice for New Principals: Partnering with Legal and Social Services.
Difficult and changing situations with students and their families require principals to broaden their support network beyond school resources. The panelists on this webinar will discuss scenarios and possible resources available within the community. They will also share ideas for making intentional connections with community partners.
Topics will include –
- Social services available for school support
- Legal processes for a variety of student issues
- Advice for new principals on how to connect with community resources
We are excited welcome the following presenters:
Liz Lindly earned her bachelor of social work degree from the University of Wyoming and her master of social work degree from Colorado State University (CSU). For 7 years, she split her time between two high schools as the school social worker. During this time, Lindly became certified as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Addiction Counselor to ensure continued learning and better skills to serve students and the community. In 2016, Lindly returned to CSU to complete the principal preparation program. She is currently in her second year as dean at Loveland High School. This career change has allowed Lindly to serve students in a different capacity and work toward greater social changes with the ultimate goal of helping to develop the whole child.
Sue Reed-Baum is currently serving her 12th year as truancy prevention specialist for Colorado’s Thompson School District. This position requires working alongside school administrators to address attendance and legal concerns. Reed-Baum also works closely with school resource officers to ensure consistent communication and support systems are in place for students and families. Reed-Baum also serves the district as the child welfare education liaison, supervises education placements and supports for youth in foster care, and serves as the district representative for the community-based Family Assessment Planning Team.
Jennifer Roth is an assistant principal at Fort Collins High School in Colorado. She is deeply invested in the long-standing partnership between her school district and CSU to support their successful teacher preparation program. Her 30-year career includes experiences as a teacher, university instructor, and school administrator. Roth has presented nationally about the professional development school model and effective clinical partnerships.
In the first webinar of the series held February 21 (archived in the AACTE Resource Library), “Leveraging Community Resources to Strengthen Clinical Practice: Investigation Techniques for School Safety,” presenters shared real world scenarios with investigation expert Stason Ikenouye. After problem solving with school leaders Traci Gile and Roy Tripi, Stason coached them through additional scenarios including incidents of cyber bulling and school crises. This webinar would work well as a discussion tool in principal preparation programs – so please make use of the recording!
