Registration Opens for AACTE 2025 Annual Meeting

Early bird registration for the AACTE 2025 Annual Meeting, set to take place February 21-23 in Long Beach, CA, has officially opened. This year’s theme, “Beyond the Horizon: Charting the Course for Educator Preparation,” promises to be a transformative event, reflecting AACTE’s ongoing commitment to revolutionizing education for all learners.

The Annual Meeting will bring together educators, researchers, policymakers, and thought leaders from across the nation to explore and address the critical advancements in educator preparation. The meeting will delve into innovative strategies and practices designed to enhance educator preparation programs and, ultimately, improve educational outcomes for students.

Seven Reasons to Nominate Your Institution for AACTE Awards

As the nomination deadline for the AACTE Awards nears on Sunday, September 15, it is essential to consider the benefits of showcasing your institution’s achievements.  

Specifically, the Best Practice category of AACTE Awards Program highlights the collective efforts institutions are making to progress teacher preparation to create more inclusive and high-quality programs for students.  

“It is an honor to be recognized by AACTE,” said Dawn Williams, Ph.D., dean of Howard University’s School of Education, who won the 2024 AACTE Best Practice Award in Support of Global and International Perspectives. “This collective effort to foster cross-cultural understanding for our pre-service teachers underscores the importance of interconnected education in our increasingly interconnected world.”  

Call for Applications: JTE-Holmes Co-Editorship Second Cohort

The call for applications for the second cohort of the Journal of Teacher Education (JTE)-Holmes Co-Editorship is now open. Selected scholars will co-author an editorial or manuscript that will appear in JTE’s special anniversary issue on teacher residency programs in 2025. This opportunity is specifically for Holmes Scholars who would like to learn how to write and publish a piece of quality scholarship in a high-impact academic journal.

Through JTE, AACTE is committed to ensuring that the next generation of education scholars, particularly underrepresented scholars, are supported as they advance their research and scholarship. The first cohort of JTE Holmes guest editors will speak about their experiences in a webinar on Thursday, September 5, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST.

AACTE Board Member Shares Insights on Black Male Educator Shortage

The United States is grappling with a severe teacher shortage, with a notable deficit of Black male educators. This shortfall is raising concerns about its impact on learning outcomes and the academic potential of PK-12 students across the nation.

AACTE board member and dean of the College of Education at Bowie State University, Rhonda Jeter, Ph.D., shared her insights on the Bowie Black Male Educators Project — a proactive initiative to counter the shortage of Black male educators in the U.S. The initiative is supported by the critical funding of the U.S. Department of Education’s Augustus F. Hawkins Centers of Excellence (Hawkins) Program.

According to Jeter, studies have indicated that having a Black teacher significantly increases the likelihood of Black students graduating high school and enrolling in college.

AACTE invites members to nominate their institutions for a prestigious award honoring the incorporation of global diversity educator preparation.

2025 Best Practice Award in Support of Global and International Perspectives 

This award recognizes exemplary practice in the intercultural, global, cross-cultural, and international arenas. It is overseen by AACTE’s Committee on Global Diversity as part of its mission to ensure that a worldwide/international perspective is brought to policy and programs associated with the preparation of education professionals. 

Nominees must be members of AACTE. Learn more and submit an entry. By nominating your institution, you are invited to use the application to highlight the important work you or your program is innovating and incorporating directly into your preparation program. Nominations are due by September 15.

The Best Practice Award for the Innovative Use of Technology overseen by AACTE’s Committee on Innovation and Technology, recognizes an innovative use of educational technologies in an AACTE member institution, school, college, or department of education (SCDE).

Bipartisan NEED Act Seeks To Help Schools, Colleges Advance in Learning 

AACTE is one of nearly 70 organizations that supports a bill seeking to make advancements in teaching and learning. 

U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO) and John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced the New Essential Education Discoveries (NEED) Act to create a national center that advances high-risk, high-reward education research projects, similar to the model employed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). 

“As a former school superintendent, I know our teachers are doing everything they can to overcome today’s educational challenges – especially as COVID, social media, and nationwide mental health crisis have made their jobs more difficult than ever. They need new tools to overcome these obstacles and educate the next generation of Americans, and Congress can help by investing in cutting-edge education research,” said Bennet. “This bipartisan bill will help schools, educators, and policy makers meet today’s education challenges and make necessary, data-based adjustments in the future.”

Tips for a Successful Annual Meeting Proposal

Do you want to feature your work at the AACTE 2025 Annual Meeting in Long Beach, CA, being held February 21 – 23? The theme, “Beyond the Horizon: Charting the Course for Educator Preparation,” illuminates the continuous forward-thinking AACTE members make in their work and aligns with the current Call for Proposals, as AACTE seeks those that share perspectives on addressing current issues and providing innovative ways to approach that which has yet to be considered in educator preparation. 

Top 5 Tips for Submitting a Successful Annual Meeting Proposal 

  1. Follow the Format – Your proposal will be evaluated based on the criteria outlined in the revised rubric. Familiarize yourself with these before writing your proposal.  

  2. Structure Your Session – Identify the type of session you want to present at the Annual Meeting. When you review the guidelines, pay attention to the AACTE session types, and ensure your proposal reflects the format of your selected session type.  

  3. Speak to the Strand – Address not only the conference theme but one of the five strands as well. Review AACTE’s official Call for Proposals, select the strand your work best supports, and ensure your proposal answers one or more of its guiding questions.  

  4. Talk about Takeaways – Reviewers will be looking for outcomes that attendees can implement, and your proposal should outline what knowledge those attending your session can both gain and apply at their institutions. 

  5. Engage Authentically – Prepare a proposal that presents your story and use your proposal to engage attendees and incorporate multiple viewpoints and feedback.
