Samira Bashiru Named October 2024 Holmes Scholar of the Month
AACTE recognizes Samira Bashiru of Purdue University as the October 2024 Holmes Scholar of the Month. Bashiru is a dedicated Ph.D. candidate in special education who embodies the spirit of academic excellence and community engagement that defines the AACTE Holmes Scholars Program. Her journey from Ghana to the United States exemplifies her commitment to advancing inclusive education and supporting diverse learners.
Research Focus
Bashiru’s research centers on evidence-based strategies and practices that support families and enhance the creativity and development of children with or without disabilities. Her particular interest lies in creativity in culturally and linguistically diverse learners with real or perceived disabilities, a focus that addresses a critical need in today’s diverse educational landscape. She has published a systematic review listed at the end of the article entitled “Best Practices for English Learners with Disabilities in US Schools – A Systematic Review.” Currently, Bashiru is working on two research papers:
- Evidence-based practices for English Learners with disabilities
- Creativity in preschoolers with and without speech disorders
Professional Experience
Prior to her doctoral studies, Bashiru served as an instructor for disability studies and early learning and childcare at Norquest College in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This experience, coupled with her role as a disability studies practicum coordinator, has provided her with valuable insights into the practical applications of her research.
Bashiru is currently an instructor-of-record, teaching EDPS 26501 The Inclusive Classroom. She is the vice president of the Graduate Organization in Educational Studies (GOEDS) in the college of education. Her involvement extends beyond the classroom, as she is a family representative of the Indiana Division of Early Childhood (IN-DEC) executive board and an active member of the Purdue Holmes Scholar program.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Bashiru aims to complete her doctoral program and secure a special education faculty position at a highly ranked university in the United States. Her goals include conducting and publishing scholarly articles, presenting research findings at conferences, mentoring students, and developing curricula. Bashiru’s aim is to impact preservice educators’ education, helping them grow intellectually and prepare for professional careers.
Bashiru’s work is particularly significant in addressing the needs of English learners with disabilities, an often-overlooked group in educational research. Her dedication to this field not only contributes to academic knowledge but also has the potential to shape more inclusive and effective teaching practices.
As a Holmes Scholar, Bashiru represents the next generation of educational leaders, bringing diverse perspectives and innovative approaches to the field of special education. Her journey from Ghana to Purdue University, and her aspirations for the future, showcase the transformative power of education and the important role of programs like Holmes Scholars in nurturing talent and driving positive change in our educational systems.
