AACTE Welcomes New Holmes Scholar for September, Anqi Fan

AACTE’s Holmes Program continues to grow, onboarding a new scholar to kick off the fall semester. Please join AACTE in welcoming Anqi Fan, from the University of Louisville.

The following is a self-reflection from Fan:

As a doctoral candidate in the Department of Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Teacher Education (EMSTed) at the University of Louisville, I focus on curriculum and instruction with a specialization in mathematics education. My research interests mainly focus on multilingual learners’ use of cultural and linguistic resources in their mathematics learning and promoting culturally responsive mathematics teaching in multilingual classrooms.

My academic journey includes a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and theology from the University of San Francisco, and a Master of Sciences in mathematics from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). I have ten years of teaching experience as a high school mathematics educator in Illinois and Indiana. I have taught mathematics in the inner city of Indianapolis to students with economic needs and from multicultural environments. I also started a Mandarin program at a high school in the Chicago area. I worked with high school exchange students from China and assisted them in adjusting to the American education system. I am passionate about helping future teachers and students to value diversity, equity, and inclusion in their educational experiences.

I am particularly excited about the opportunity to contribute to the AACTE Holmes Scholars program’s mission and commitment to education practices that focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion in programs of higher education and PK-12 schools.
