Education Leaders Sharpen Their Skills at AACTE Leadership Academy

2019 Leadership Academy participants conversing

More than 90 leaders from education programs across the country convened in Pittsburgh, PA. for AACTE’s 2019 Leadership Academy, June 23-27. Attendees shared their experiences on Twitter using #AACTELA19 and offered testimonials about their experience. Here’s what a few participants had to say:

“The AACTE Leadership Academy was a fantastic opportunity! The combination of the excellent instructors, event organization, and content contributed to an extremely worthwhile experience.  While I expected to learn more about leadership, I did not anticipate how important the other participants were going to be to the Academy. My network has significantly expanded as a result of the Leadership Academy, and my new colleagues (and friends) are a wealth of information and support for my work as a leader.” – Louis Nadelson, University of Central Arkansas

“The whole experience was wonderful. I felt nurtured as a leader, and appreciated all the candid and honest sharing of leadership knowledge from both the speakers and my peers. The applicable experiences retold by the speakers were so helpful and shared with such honesty and grace. Every moment was valuable and appreciated.” – Lynn Patterson, Murray State University

“One of my favorite parts were the breakout sessions where I could learn from other Chairs—what works, what does not work. Also, there were six people from North Carolina. I did not know them before or that they were going to the Academy. We found each other and had dinner one evening. I found out what other universities are doing in my state. It was a great networking opportunity. I also made some new friendships!

I also thought the faculty were wonderful. They used personal, real-world examples that we could all relate to. And if it was something we have already dealt with, we learned new and innovative ways to work through the issue in the future. The virtual meetings were extremely helpful and the volunteers were extremely brave!

I came back and told my dean that I thought all new chairs, associate deans, deans, and directors would benefit from the Academy! Where else can you learn to specifically be a chair, associate dean, dean, and director in a college of education?” – Denise Brewer, Appalachian State University

“I found the AACTE Leadership Academy to be extremely valuable to my professional growth as an academic leader. The sincerity, authenticity, and creativity demonstrated by the instructors were phenomenal and offered us role models for our own practice. I also appreciated the opportunity to actually practice conflict management, messaging, and planning for diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as network with other colleagues facing similar challenges and opportunities.” – Rebecca Bustamante, Sam Houston State University
