Ayana Bass of Boston University Named July 2024 Holmes Scholar of the Month

The AACTE Holmes Scholars Program is proud to feature Ayana Bass as the July 2024 Holmes Scholar of the Month. Bass is a dedicated and influential figure in special education, focusing on adult learners and teacher diversity.

As a doctoral student at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education & Human Development, her academic and professional journey highlights her commitment to improving education through research, policy, and practice.

Academic and Research Pursuits

Bass’ research interests center on special education, particularly the needs of adult learners in traditional teacher preparation programs, teacher diversity, certification pathways, and education policy. Her academic path began at Rhode Island College, where she was a McNair Scholar. During this time, she conducted important research on the lack of diversity among teachers and teacher candidates, exploring alternative certification pathways. This work laid the groundwork for her future studies.

Continuing her education, Bass earned a master’s degree in urban education policy at Brown University. With the support of a fellowship, she was able to dive deeper into her research from a policy perspective, enriching her understanding of educational inequalities and learning how to advocate for change.

Professional Contributions

Beyond her academic achievements, Bass plays a significant role in educational leadership. She is a member of the Rhode Island CEEDAR State Leadership Team Steering Committee and the Rhode Island Blueprint Goal 3 Work Group. In these roles, she works with educational leaders to create positive organizational cultures, develop effective protocols, and provide learning opportunities that emphasize equity and access in education.

Bass’ work in these groups shows her dedication to making sure that educational practices and policies are inclusive and fair, especially for marginalized and underrepresented communities.

Bass is deeply committed to advancing diversity and equity in education. Her research, leadership, and advocacy work are paving the way for more inclusive and effective educational systems. As she continues her doctoral studies, Bass remains a dedicated scholar and leader, striving to make meaningful changes in education policy and practice for the benefit of all learners.
