Indra Lyn Owens Named April 2024 Holmes Scholar of the Month
Congratulations to Indra Lyn Owens, the distinguished Holmes Scholar of the Month for April 2024. Owens is an inspiring educator, counselor, and community leader who embodies the spirit of the Holmes Program. As a second-year doctoral student in the Counselor Education and Supervision program at Rowan University, Owens is dedicated to empowering marginalized communities through mental health advocacy and building resilient families.
Owens’ passion for service began early as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, embracing the mantra “Service to All Mankind.” Her commitment to being an agent of positive change in her community is woven through every aspect of her work and life.
With over two decades of experience in education, Owens has made immense impacts as a certified school counselor in the Atlantic City Public Schools. She guides students in making healthy choices, providing counseling services, and advocating for equity and access. Indra’s leadership roles include coordinating intervention services, serving as an anti-bullying specialist, and crisis support.
Beyond her work in schools, Owens is the curator of the #TrustYourJourney Project, LLC, focused on deconstructing mental health myths and promoting mindfulness, especially in urban communities. Her dissertation research explores resilience theory and socio-emotional learning frameworks to build resilience in marginalized and minoritized families impacted by trauma.
Owens’ influence extends through her writing, speaking engagements, and workshop facilitation. She is a self-published author of three books, providing tools for personal growth, wisdom, and balance. Indra has been a keynote speaker at youth empowerment conferences and has presented at numerous professional development events.
Among her many honors, Owens was named the 2020 School Counselor of the Year in New Jersey by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and received the 2021 Dr. Hector Rios Community Change Agent Award from Rowan University’s Chi Sigma Iota chapter.
Owens exemplifies the qualities of a Holmes Scholar – a passionate leader, an advocate for equity and inclusion, and a driving force for positive change in education and communities. Her unwavering dedication to service, mental health awareness, and empowering marginalized groups is truly inspiring.
