Linzy Andre Named February Holmes Scholar of the Month, Syracuse University

Congratulations to Linzy Andre, the distinguished Holmes Scholar of the Month for February 2024. Andre (she/her/hers) is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in counseling & counselor education at Syracuse University. Originally hailing from Brooklyn, NY, she completed her undergraduate studies in psychology at Hunter College, followed by her master’s in mental health counseling.

Andre’s research focuses on the lived experiences of students of color within counseling. She specializes in various areas, including but not limited to issues of client, student, and educator diversity in counseling. Her captivating dissertation, “Becoming a Counselor: Narratives from Black Women Counselors about Healing Wounds,” provides a unique perspective as it is written from the standpoint of a fellow Black woman counselor who has dedicated a decade to this field.

Throughout her tenure at Syracuse University, Andre has positively influenced the lives of numerous undergraduate and graduate students through the courses she’s taught. Her teachings revolve around the development of early career counselors and the implications of sociocultural diversity. These course topics align seamlessly with her extensive research background, which primarily focuses on the experiences of minoritized counselors, diverse counselor training, and the recruitment and retention of graduate students of color. Impressively, she has also ventured beyond her scope of research to embark on a grant-funded project that explores the discourse surrounding fatphobia, anti-blackness, and body neutrality.

Currently, in the final year of her doctoral program, Andre intentionally makes time for activities that bring joy to her life. Among these are dancing to her heart’s content, savoring her favorite playlists, and cherishing quality moments with her chosen family, consisting of fellow doctoral students of color. Throughout her journey in graduate school, Andre has learned a valuable lesson: the sun always shines. It radiates through love, hope, and healing, and it persists even in times of darkness. Andre’s sunshine emanates from her sense of community and family, serving as both her beginning and her source of strength.

Once again, hearty congratulations to Linzy Andre for her remarkable achievements as the Holmes Scholar of the Month for February 2024. Her dedication to advancing counseling research and her commitment to nurturing a diverse and inclusive community within the field is truly commendable.
