Charles Barnes Named July Holmes Scholar of the Month
Congratulations to Charles A. Barnes, II Holmes Scholar of the Month for July 2023!
Barnes holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Rowan University-Glassboro (RU) and a Juris Doctorate from Rutgers University School of Law-Camden. He returned to Rowan to pursue a Ph.D. in Urban and Diverse Learning Environments. His area of research focuses on the intersectionality of social identities and related systems of oppression, discrimination, or domination as it relates to LGBTQIA+ communities.
As a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Barnes has had roots in service, social justice, and scholarship. Previously, Barnes served as acting director in the New Jersey State Office of Constituent Services. After becoming deputy chief of staff to a New Jersey State Senator, he aided in the design and implementation of the New Jersey STARS program and has also served as a state lobbyist.
Currently, Barnes is the educational support graduate coordinator for the Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Rowan University. In this role, he serves as a paraprofessional conducting research, facilitating training, and providing support to the division’s Anti-racist Pedagogies & Practices Task Force. Simultaneously, Barnes serves as an adjunct professor for Rowan where he teaches courses in government, legal writing, business law, and legal issues in higher education.
Barnes has a passion for reading, writing, advocating, disrupting systems of oppression, and educating others. Outside of the academic and professional setting he enjoys music, especially playing the piano and spending quality time with family and friends.
His motto is: “We fail to realize that we have become participants just by doing nothing. Unless we choose to interrupt it (systems), it will continue to go on. Our silence is consent. Until our discomfort becomes larger than our comfort, we will probably stay in this cycle.”— Bobbie Harro
