Why Attend AACTE’s 2022 Leadership Academy: Hear from This Year’s Participants

Earlier last month, AACTE announced that its signature, Leadership Academy convening would be returning in 2022 with a new, in-person format. The reimagined programming allows academic leaders to customize their learning experience while minimizing time spent out of the office. And at a reduced price point, attendees can participate in essential professional development while saving money on registration and hotel costs.

But why should new and seasoned leaders attend the Academy? Here’s what a few of this year’s confirmed registrants had to say regarding their decision to attend in 2022, and what they hope to gain from the experience:

Malcolm Butler – Dean and Professor, Cato College of Education, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Why did you register to attend the 2022 Leadership Academy?

I am a new dean (but not a new administrator). Colleagues and previous attendees encouraged me to attend the Academy to help me grow in my new role. Several of them shared that the Academy helped them develop a network of support that has been instrumental in their success. I am hoping for a similar outcome.

What are you most looking forward to during the Academy?

I look forward to connecting with leaders who are passionate about education.

Stacey Leftwich – Executive Director of the Office of Educator Support and Partnerships, Rowan University

Why did you register to attend the 2022 Leadership Academy?

I attended the Academy a few years ago when I was a new department chair. I recall it being one of the most helpful professional developments since entering higher ed.  Now that I have moved into a higher level of administration, I felt the Academy could be a great professional development refresher.

What are you most looking forward to during the Academy?

Meeting leaders from across the county and developing relationships that will turn into a network. Participants come to the Academy to grow in their leadership skills, so I look forward to growing [mine] while building lasting relationships and a support system.

Willis Jones – Incoming Chair, School of Education and Human Development, University of Miami

Why did you register to attend the 2022 Leadership Academy?

I registered to attend upon the suggestion of my dean.  I will be a new department chair starting next academic year. We both feel this workshop will be an excellent opportunity for me to learn more about the challenges and opportunities that come along with the position.

What are you most looking forward to during the Academy?

I hope to better understand what faculty expect from a department chair and tips on balancing faculty and administrator responsibilities.
