Michael E. Dantley of Miami University of Ohio Becomes AACTE Board Chair
AACTE (American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education) announced Michael E. Dantley, Ed.D., Dean Emeritus of the College of Education, Health and Society (EHS) at the Miami University of Ohio as the new chair of its board of directors.
During his one-year term, Dantley will support AACTE and President and CEO Lynn M. Gangone, Ed.D., in implementing the Association’s strategic goals, upholding democracy by combatting the divisive issues taking hold in education, and preparing the organization for its 75th anniversary in 2023.
“As an advocate for DEI, I’ve worked throughout my career to change lives for the better and have an impact not only on my university and community, but the state of education overall. After facing the pandemic these past two years, our educators and educator preparation institutions are dealing with divisive issues involving equity and censorship,” says Dantley, who’s known for championing racial and social justice.
Over the course of his 40-year career, Dantley has held nearly every position in education, beginning in 1973 as an elementary teacher in Cincinnati Public Schools. He worked his way up to elementary school principal before moving into higher education in 1986 as assistant professor at Miami University of Ohio. There, he served in many leadership roles, including chair of the department of educational leadership, associate provost, associate vice president for academic affairs, and EHS associate dean for academic affairs.
Dantley earned his Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Cincinnati, after receiving his Master of Education at Miami University in Oxford, Oh. His many leadership roles in professional organizations have included president elect of AACTE’s CADREI; president, University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA); vice president, Division A, American Educational Research Association; member, Illinois School Leadership Advisory Council; member, Council of Academic Deans from Research Education Institutions; and member of Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities Deans of Education.
Throughout his career, Dantley has received many awards, including UCEA’s Hidden Figure nominee; Don Walters Award from Temple University; Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission; Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society; and Miami University’s School of Education and Allied Professions Joseph Delp Outstanding Faculty Award.
His published works have focused on DEI, in particular around the Black experience in academia and leadership preparation. He has held many editorial roles, most recently as editorial board member for the National Association of Secondary School Principals Bulletin; Black College Review; Journal of School Leadership, Education and Urban Society; Education Administration Quarterly; and Journal of Black Masculinity. He’s been a reviewer for the Journal of Leadership in Education: Theory and Practice.
AACTE’s Gangone states, “We are excited about Dr. Dantley’s term as board chair as the organization prepares for its 75th anniversary during this time of crisis in education. Under his expert leadership, AACTE can move forward to support DEI and the future of democracy in education and educator preparation.”
