Next Education Workforce Summitt 2022

In a bonus episode of the Next Education Workforce podcast, former U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King, Jr. tells Brent Maddin of Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College about the impact public school had on King’s life and how his work today has been shaped by his experiences as a student, classroom teacher, civil servant and policymaker.

“The thing that saved me was school. The consistency, the nurturing relationships, the engagement at school is the reason I’m alive today,” King says. He goes on to describe the challenges educators face and the lack of support that prevents teachers from achieving everything society asks of them. “We don’t always provide the working conditions that folks need to stay in the work and feel good about the work, so we have work to do as a society.”

King, president and CEO of The Education Trust, will be the keynote speaker at Arizona State University’s Next Education Workforce Summit 2022 in February. The event brings together education practitioners, leaders, and experts for a day-and-a-half virtual conference, where they’ll engage in sessions on education policy, research, equity, workforce diversity and more.

The convening is designed for educators to network and collaborate with other colleagues who are thinking differently about the educator workforce, says Maddin, executive director of the Next Education Workforce initiative. “It’s ideal for anyone who knows that the one-teacher, one-classroom model of teaching and learning does not reliably deliver quality learning outcomes and experiences for nearly enough people and communities—and is interested in joining conversations about systems-level change,” he says.

View the agenda, additional featured experts or register to attend. The $150 early-bird registration rate ends Friday, December 17.
