Discover Atlanta at the AACTE Annual Meeting

Atlanta Night life

AACTE’s 72nd Annual Meeting will take place at the iconic Atlanta Marriott Marquis, conveniently located downtown, with indoor MARTA access to Atlanta’s airport and local attractions. Within just a short walk from the hotel, you can enjoy the city’s shopping, dining, and entertainment centers while the conference is not in session.

Here are a few Atlanta fun facts to help kick start your exploration of the city:

  1. Check out the Peachtrees!
Atlanta is home to 71 streets with a variation of the word “Peachtree” in their names: Peachtree Avenue, Peachtree Plaza, etc. However, there are no peach trees in Atlanta, nor are peach trees native to the area! The name “peachtree” evolved from “pitch tree,” which is what the native pine trees were called because of their sticky sap. So take note the next time you listen to Sinatra’s “Peachtree Street” duet with Rosemary Clooney or the album Peachtree Road by Sir Elton John.

  2. Visit the world’s largest drive-in restaurant.
The Varsity is the world’s largest drive-in restaurant, serving more Coca-Cola (another Atlanta creation) by volume than anywhere else in the world. Find it in downtown Atlanta, alongside I-85 at the corner of North Ave. and Spring St.

  3. Experience the busiest airport in the world.
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has held the title of “world’s busiest airport” for the past 18 years. Many airports claim to be the world’s busiest; however, its 101 million passengers exceeds any “passenger movements” in other airports around the world. ATL is just a three-hour flight (or less!) from most major American cities and its terminal is as big as 45 football fields!

  4. Discover why Atlanta is the next Hollywood.
Georgia currently ranks third in the nation in U.S. film production, and first in growth. More than 140 films and TV shows have been produced in Atlanta since 2008. In fact, many iconic scenes from The Hunger Games series were filmed at the Annual Meeting host hotel.
