The 30th annual conference of the Japan-U.S. Teacher Education Consortium (JUSTEC) will be held September 14-17 at Bukkyo University in Kyoto, Japan. Conference organizers invite proposals for paper and poster presentations by March 15 under the theme “Next Steps in Teacher Education in the U.S. and Japan: Celebrating 30 Years of JUSTEC.”

To commemorate the milestone anniversary, participants in this year’s conference will reflect on past collaborations and accomplishments, assess the current changing landscape of teacher education, and look ahead to the new approaches, frameworks, technologies, and international relationships to support teacher learning and educational research.

Keynote speakers at the conference will include AACTE President/CEO Lynn M. Gangone and her Japanese counterpart, President Kazuko Takano of the Japanese Society for the Study of Teacher Education. Other featured speakers include founding members of JUSTEC David G. Imig (AACTE president/CEO emeritus) and Shinichi Suzuki (professor emeritus, Waseda University).

The 2018 call for proposals cites three areas of particular interest:

  1. Ongoing Teacher Professional Development: Models and Practices
  2. How Can Teachers Be Supported to Engage a Diverse Range of Learners?
  3. How Does National Policy Affect Teacher Quality?

AACTE helped establish JUSTEC in the 1980s to unite Japanese and U.S. teacher educators to promote understanding of and collaborative research into issues of mutual interest. The annual seminar is hosted on an alternating basis between the two lead countries and enjoys support from the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. Participants will have opportunities to not only share research and practice but also engage in cultural activities such as meals and tours in the host community – including an optional site visit to a local school.

Registration for the event is expected to open May 15, with payment and hotel reservations due by July 15. For specific proposal requirements, download the official JUSTEC 2018 Call for Proposals (PDF). For program details, download the JUSTEC 2018 flyer (PDF). For more information, visit the JUSTEC website. The early bird deadline is June 15.
