Dissertation Award Entries Due Aug. 18

Time is running out to apply for the 2018 AACTE Outstanding Dissertation Award! Entries must be made online by Friday, August 18. Help AACTE recognize outstanding doctoral research in educator preparation by encouraging your top recent graduates (or recent hires) to apply for this prestigious award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize.

The Committee on Research and Dissemination will review submissions this fall, and applicants will learn of their status in November (although the announcement of the winner is embargoed until February). The winner will be recognized during AACTE’s 70th Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, March 1-3, 2018.

The award honors doctoral dissertation research (or its equivalent) that contributes to the knowledge base of educator preparation or of teaching and learning with implications for educator preparation. Individuals earning a doctorate in education since January 1, 2016, are eligible to apply.

Recent winners completed their dissertations at Johns Hopkins University (MD), the University of Tennessee, University of Washington, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Kansas State University. Read about the 2017 winner here.

A few last-minute notes for applicants:

  • Please don’t send us your complete dissertation! The committee wants to read only your abstract, table of contents, and references, plus a 10-page narrative answering specific questions about the study’s design, findings, and implications.
  • This is a blind review, so please be sure to remove identifying information from these documents.
  • You also will need a letter of recommendation from your adviser, or at least from a member of your committee, so be sure to request that now if you have not already done so! (This letter can include your identifying information; AACTE’s committee members won’t look at it until they’ve completed their blind review.)

Learn more about this opportunity here, and feel free to direct questions to me at kmccabe@aacte.org.

Also remember: Submission for other AACTE awards is open as well! The deadline to apply for the 2018 Best Practice Awards and Professional Achievement Awards is Thursday, October 12. See our award descriptions, selection criteria, and other details here.
