Call for Proposals: JUSTEC 2017

The 29th annual conference of the Japan-U.S. Teacher Education Consortium (JUSTEC) will be held September 14-17 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Although registration is not yet open, the submission site is ready for your paper and poster presentation proposals, due by April 5.

JUSTEC organizers seek presentations related to educator preparation in either country – or, better yet, related to collaborative research or exchange between the two. In particular, this year’s conference has three invited areas of interest:

  1. Professional development for in-service educators
  2. Preservice preparation of teachers to support diverse learner needs
  3. National-level policy related to preservice or in-service teacher development

As is the JUSTEC tradition, this year’s conference will begin with an optional site visit to a school, Waikiki Elementary School. The keynote address September 15 will be given by Thomas Jackson, who a specialist faculty member at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and director of the Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education and its “Philosophy for Children” approach to community engagement and inquiry. The rest of the weekend will feature seminars, poster presentations, networking events, and an optional local tour.

AACTE helped establish JUSTEC in the 1980s to unite Japanese and U.S. teacher educators to promote understanding of and collaborative research into issues of mutual interest. The annual seminar is hosted on an alternating basis between the two lead countries and enjoys support from the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.

Registration for this year’s event is expected to open May 5. For specific proposal requirements, download the official JUSTEC 2017 Call for Proposals (PDF).
