Free Assessment Course Starting Jan. 30

In just a couple of weeks, I’ll be leading AACTE’s first online course with FutureLearn, “Designing Assessments to Measure Student Outcomes.” I am thrilled to be bringing AACTE’s online professional seminars to this robust global platform with enhanced content and an innovative social-learning model. Won’t you join me for this enriching experience?

The assessment course opens January 30 and runs for 3 weeks, requiring about 3 hours per week of your time. Each week, we’ll explore a different aspect of assessment, starting with an overview of foundational issues such as validity and reliability before moving on to designing and using rubrics and surveys.

The videos, articles, quizzes, and other materials I’ve prepared for the course aim to provide a helpful introduction for those new to assessment. If you’re already knowledgeable about the basics, though, you will find the discussions and assignments to be informative as registrants share global models and perspectives.

Who Should Participate

As all educators need to design and administer assessments, the subject matter in this course is applicable to higher education faculty (particularly assessment coordinators and teacher educators) as well as PK-12 educators and teacher candidates. In fact, the nature of the material and the convenient online model make this course well suited to being incorporated into teacher preparation course work.

Cost and Credentials

Like all FutureLearn courses, AACTE’s online seminars are free! Participants who want credentials certifying their experience may opt to purchase a certificate of achievement after each course. Successful completion of the full series, including purchase of the relevant credentials, is required to quality for training as an AACTE quality assurance consultant.

Future Dates, Courses

This assessment course is the first in a series of six online professional seminars to be offered on the FutureLearn platform. Currently, just the first two courses in the series are available for registration – see AACTE’s FutureLearn page for details—and we’re working to complete the enhancements to our other four courses by late summer. Each course will be offered repeatedly and in convenient sequences for those looking to take them as a complete program.

The series is a core offering of AACTE’s Quality Support Center, bringing professional learning opportunities to our members and others working on assessment, accreditation, and program improvement efforts. In addition to this first course on designing assessments, the seminars cover strategies for using data, quality assurance systems, evidence and standards for accreditation, and more.

I look forward to “seeing” you, and your students and colleagues, online this month!
