Grant to Support State Leaders Institute Sessions

Please join AACTE for a free policy discussion and reception June 6! RSVP here.

Each summer, AACTE’s State Leaders Institute (SLI) brings together leaders of the Association’s state chapters to discuss important trends in state policies and to advocate for the profession. This year, the institute will be held June 5-6 as part of AACTE’s 2016 Washington Week, themed “Diverse Perspectives, Deep Partnerships, One Profession,” at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA.

Thanks to a grant from the Learning First Alliance’s Get It Right campaign, the 2016 SLI will offer interactive sessions highlighting how state policy for college- and career-ready standards will be affected by the recently passed Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the implications for educator preparation. Participants will gain a deeper understanding about the uniqueness of individual states, find ways in which they are similar, and discover how those similarities can help frame a common message.

Many of AACTE’s member institutions are highly engaged in the implementation of their states’ college- and career-ready standards and have taken proactive steps to inform and engage faculty, align their course content, collaborate with local districts, and support each other in adjusting their curricula to ensure that future teachers are also ready for the new standards. At SLI, participants will discuss solutions for the challenges that may arise for educator preparation providers in implementing the Common Core State Standards and ESSA in the face of the changing political landscape. Attendees will interact with other leaders from across the nation, learning strategies for building partnerships with state policy makers and for forging coalitions with other state education groups.

While registration for the full two-day SLI event is limited to AACTE chapter leaders and their counterparts from the Association of Teacher Educators, the afternoon sessions on June 6 are open to anyone interested in educator preparation. During these panel-led sessions, attendees will hear from representatives of leading national education organizations such as the National Association of State Boards of Education, Education Commission of the States, National Governors Association, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, National Education Association, and Council of Chief State School Officers, to name a few that have been invited. Participants will celebrate the day’s activities during an evening reception full of networking opportunities with state leaders and industry partners.

If you would like to participate in the free SLI afternoon sessions and evening reception from 1:00–7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6, please RSVP here or contact Aaron Goldstein, AACTE manager of state policy and relations, at agoldstein@aacte.org by May 26. Space is limited!

Visit our Washington Week web page for a draft agenda, hotel information, and more.
