Have you ever been to a workshop that offered a Make-and-Take: Make a project, wrap it up, and take it home? In AACTE’s Online Professional Seminars (OPSs), you can do just that. The models and other resources shared in these short courses allow you to select materials for immediate application in your own setting, download them in user-friendly files, and then share with colleagues at your home institution.
In OPS #3: Creating a Quality Assurance System, we’ll look at eight heuristic strategies including a template for conducting a “SWOT” analysis—a staple for organizations’ self-examination of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. You’ll get a downloadable template in a PowerPoint file ready for display and editing.
The SWOT technique is a proven method for a team to kick off an initiative that includes goal-setting. Often presented as a brainstorming exercise, the SWOT analysis can be conducted in two sessions: First, participants can place ideas in each of the quadrants without filtering them for accuracy. Large groups may divide into four subgroups to cover one quadrant apiece, or subgroups can each consider all four areas of the chart. Then in the second session, participants return to the display to edit with the benefit of time for reflection.
OPS #3 offers guidance about using the SWOT template with a group, along with seven other strategies. The templates can be downloaded from OPS #3 separately or in a file set.
In addition to content such as the heuristic strategies, AACTE’s short online courses feature asynchronous discussions that can be accessed anytime during their 4-week spans. At the end of 4 weeks, discussions are closed to new comments, but the courses remain accessible indefinitely for ease of reference.

OPSs can be taken in any sequence—there are no prerequisites—and are open to everyone. The registration fee for AACTE members is $50 per course; the nonmember rate is $125 (and the introductory OPS #1 and #2 are free!).
