October Is National Principals Month

Did you know October is National Principals Month? While we appreciate our school leaders year round, this month is a special time to honor principals for their leadership and vital work in schools.

National Principals Month is a broad celebration of the principalship, marked by national and state resolutions, formal awards and recognitions, and acknowledgments from U.S. senators and representatives and other top government officials. It is an opportunity to say “thank you” to principals across the nation and to share with the community all the great things that principals do.

AACTE joins the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and American Federation of School Administrators in recognizing the important work of principals in making schools great. Earlier this month, NASSP announced the National Principal of the Year as Rhode Island College graduate Alan Tenreiro of Cumberland High School (RI), and today, NAESP is honoring top K-8 principals from around the country at a banquet for National Distinguished Principals.

In support of the longstanding work of AACTE member institutions to prepare school leaders, the Association promotes high-quality principal development efforts. AACTE participates in the University Council for Educational Administration and is a communications partner for the Wallace Foundation’s Principal Pipeline Initiative to strengthen the preparation and support of principals. Current work in this partnership includes a webinar series, a member survey, and a preconference event at the 2016 AACTE Annual Meeting.
