Leadership Academy Alumna: Experience ‘Invaluable’
AACTE’s 2014 Leadership Academy will convene June 22-26 at the Marriott Milwaukee Downtown to develop rising leaders in educator preparation in an intensive networking and skill-building experience. Attendees will be guided by experienced deans and chairs of the Leadership Academy Faculty in developing the powerful leadership and administrative skills needed to succeed.
As registration gets under way for this year’s event, I called upon Kandi Hill-Clarke, dean of the Bayh College of Education at Indiana State University and alumna of the 2013 Leadership Academy, to tell me about her experience at last year’s event. Below she describes how she has used what she learned to become a more successful leader and dean.
The AACTE Leadership Academy was one of the most enlightening, engaging, and empowering professional development opportunities of my career in higher education. This Academy is a must for anyone considering or just entering the deanship in a college of education. Each session was led by a team of diverse, knowledgeable, and talented experts. Each day was filled with thought-provoking and insightful conversation, engaging activities, and time for deep reflection.
As I entered my first year as dean of the Bayh College of Education at Indiana State University, I dove into the Academy’s recommended readings and put into practice many of the ideas shared by faculty and peers. To begin building relationships, for example, I scheduled individual meetings with all faculty and staff in the College. I coined these meetings as my “LOL Tour” – a time for me to Listen, Observe, and Learn. These individual conversations have afforded me great insights and the opportunity to make connections by getting to know the person behind the title and name badge.
Other ideas from the Academy that I have put into practice include developing my “elevator speech,” finding the right balance of activities so that I can be my best self while embracing every moment, and taking time to recognize and appreciate each person’s strengths and talents. My professional toolbox is overflowing with helpful resources, fresh ideas, and a strong support system of colleagues from across the nation.
Attending the AACTE Leadership Academy was an investment in my personal and professional development. The associated resources and networking opportunities have allowed me to enter my role as dean with confidence, enthusiasm, and purpose. Participating in the Academy has proven to be an invaluable experience for me. The benefits are priceless!
Leadership Academy registration is open here through May 31. For any questions regarding this year’s Academy, please contact me at ctambini@aacte.org or (202) 478-4591.
