Twitter Chat Provides Preview of Clinical Practice Commission Report

In a Twitter chat last week, members of the AACTE Clinical Practice Commission discussed how effective clinical educator preparation produces profession-ready teachers, sharing key points from the commission’s findings over the past 2 years. The nearly 80 tweets at #AACTEcpc yielded more than 108,000 impressions during the lively conversation led by Susan Adams (Butler University, IN), Jennifer Roth (Poudre School District, CO), Laurie Henry (University of Kentucky), Marcy Keifer-Kennedy (Ohio University), Rene Roselle (University of Connecticut), Diane Fogarty (Loyola Marymount University, CA), Rod Lucero (AACTE), and moderator Amanda Lester (AACTE).

Participants discussed the purpose of the AACTE Clinical Practice Commission, the importance of clinical practice in teacher preparation, the role of clinical partnerships, and how the soon-to-be-released report of the commission will help inform the practice of the entire education community.

Speakers, Online Supplements Announced for Clinical Practice Press Briefing

AACTE is pleased to share new announcements related to the Clinical Practice Commission’s upcoming press briefing. We’ve confirmed several speakers and panelists for the briefing in Washington, DC, and in addition to registering to attend the live event, you can sign up to view a live webcast of the briefing and join members of the commission for a Twitter chat this week.

Limited seating is still available for the briefing itself, which will be held Wednesday, January 17, 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. New AACTE InTouch Segment Shows How Community Partnerships Can Combat Teacher Shortage

Today, AACTE released the second video segment of the AACTE InTouch mini-documentary series, “How Community Partnerships Can Combat Teacher Shortage." Teacher shortages are a growing concern and while there are many causes, one emerging solution is to create a supportive and collaborative environment through sustainable partnerships.

The new video educates viewers on how university, school, and community partnerships aid in creating a robust pipeline and conditions critical to recruiting and retaining teachers. It addresses three important topics: why partnerships are important to preparing good teachers; what types of partnerships can support teaching; and examples of successful partnerships.

Quality Assurance: Moving Beyond Data Collection Toward Assuring Quality

This interactive workshop is designed to help educator preparation providers reflect, share, and learn about how to design and implement an assessment system that will meet their local, state, and national standards, while demonstrating the continued quality of their programs. Facilitated by members of AACTE’s Committee on Professional Preparation and Accountability.

AACTE Clinical Practice Commission to Release Findings at National Press Club Briefing

To ensure that educators are prepared to meet the needs of all learners, the AACTE Clinical Practice Commission will release its findings on effective clinical educator preparation during a press briefing Wednesday, January 17, 2018. Panelists from the commission will present and discuss their culminating white paper at the event, to be held 9:00-11:00 a.m. EST at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

Written by teacher educators representing expertise in theory, practice, and scholarship across the learning continuum, the report, A Pivot Toward Clinical Practice, Its Lexicon, and the Renewal of Educator Preparation, provides research- and practice-based recommendations, including a shared professional lexicon, for all educators to embrace as a foundation for effectively implementing clinical practice.

AACTE InTouch: ‘What Makes a Good Teacher?’

Did you know AACTE produces a mini-documentary series called AACTE InTouch? These brief videos inform the public about educator preparation and ways to advocate for, get involved in, and support the education profession.

The series educates viewers on how effective teachers are prepared and showcases successes and challenges in educator preparation. The video content is designed to align with the Association’s key messages focused on quality, advocacy, partnerships, and innovation. Featuring a variety of topics and layered storytelling, the series helps viewers understand the critical issues in educator preparation, feel connected to AACTE’s mission, and learn about innovations in the field.

AACTE is delighted to announce Diane Ravitch as the featured speaker at the Closing Keynote session of the 70th Annual Meeting, March 3, 2018, in Baltimore, Maryland. She will speak on the state of education in America and the viable solutions that will help strengthen public education.

Celebrate National Principals Month

AACTE celebrates National Principals Month this October! The key to student success is a great school, and the key to a great school is a great principal. Please join us in this opportunity to say “thank you” to principals across the nation and to recognize their valuable contributions in your local community.

National Principals Month gives us the chance to honor and reflect on the roles of school leaders and the importance of preparing them well. AACTE members across the country are working to advance principal preparation through a variety of initiatives and partnerships. For example, AACTE member institution Colorado State University will host a 2-day School Leadership Institute this fall to survey new principals about ways to enhance university-based preparation programs and support school leaders in their critical first year on the job. Many other institutions are participating in AACTE’s new Principal Preparation Program Learning Community Topical Action Group, a member-led collaborative exploring issues and promising practice in principal preparation.

For several years, AACTE has encouraged members to “tell their stories” so local communities and policy makers can learn more about the positive work educator preparation professionals do every day. Storytelling is indeed essential to getting your message out in a way that creates lasting impressions in people’s minds and hearts. AACTE is now integrating storytelling, video and technology to more broadly disseminate member stories.

New Annual Meeting Session Formats to Elevate Engagement Opportunities

The AACTE 2018 Annual Meeting will feature new and improved sessions that will provide deeper levels of audience engagement. AACTE is committed to modeling best practices for effective learning and offering attendees contemporary approaches to pedagogy. Join AACTE in Baltimore, Maryland, for a collaborative and interactive educational experience designed to contextualize data and information, foster peer-to-peer interaction and dialogue, and apply sound principles of adult education.

All of the conference formats for Major Forums and concurrent sessions have been revamped. In fact, we will say “good-bye” to Major Forums and “hello” to Deeper Dives! In the enriched Deeper Dive sessions, still scheduled in pairs during dedicated time slots, you will get inspiring content to apply in your daily work by exploring the practices and dispositions crucial to educator preparation today. Topics at these sessions reflect work that is central to AACTE’s mission and its ongoing initiatives, including presentations from collaborating institutions, affiliate organizations, government agencies, think tanks, and thought leaders from the field.

AACTE Members, Partners Discuss Efforts to Bring Men of Color Into Teaching Profession on Radio Show

This month’s episode of Education Talk Radio spotlighted AACTE’s national Black & Hispanic/Latino Male Teachers Initiative Networked Improvement Community (NIC) and other efforts to increase men of color in the teaching workforce. In the August 9 show, host Larry Jacobs interviewed Director of College Access and Completion Michael Dennehy of Boston University (MA), Director of Call Me MISTER Roy Jones of Clemson University (SC), Associate Professor Shatriya Collier-Stewart of California State University-Northridge, Executive Director Lemuel Watson of the Center for Innovation in Higher Education at the University of South Carolina, and Behavior Interventionist Ryan Jeffery at Fairfax County Public Schools (VA).

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, just 2% of public school teachers across the country are Black males and fewer are Hispanic males. AACTE’s national NIC initiative helps institutions identify innovative strategies to increase the percentage of Black and Hispanic/Latino men receiving initial teaching certification through their preparation programs.

EPPs Engaging in Quality Assurance at AACTE Workshop

This week, more than 150 attendees are hard at work in Minneapolis, Minnesota, participating in AACTE’s Quality Support Workshop. The diverse group of educators from the Midwest and beyond are engaging in deep-dive sessions enhancing their programs and planning around continuous improvement, assessment, accreditation, and quality assurance.

During the event, which runs through Saturday, the interactivity has extended well beyond the conference rooms as attendees share posts on social media, connect at receptions, and pose for photos in the hallways.
