Apply by April 24 for Federal Grant to Support Development of Teachers of ELL Students
The U.S. Department of Education is now accepting applications for a new grant competition to support the development of educators serving English language learners (ELLs). The deadline to apply is April 24 (note that the Department requests a notification of intent to apply by March 13, but this is not required).
Grant funds awarded under this competition will go to consortia of higher education and state or local agency partners for the following purposes:
- Preservice or in-service professional development programs to improve the qualifications and skills of ELL educators
- Development of program curricula to meet the needs of the consortium applicants
- Strengthening and increasing parent, family, and community engagement in the education of ELLs
- Development and dissemination of effective practices in the instruction of ELLs
- Financial assistance for prospective ELL educators to complete degrees and meet licensure requirements
- Strategies that promote school readiness of ELLs and their transition from early childhood education programs
Grant funds are limited to $550,000 per year (for up to 5 years), and the Department anticipates awarding up to 44 grants, pending congressional appropriations for the program.
