Call for Proposals: Holmes Scholars Dissertation Funding Competition

AACTE, the 2018 Holmes Council, and the National Association of Holmes Scholars Alumni (NAHSA) invite current doctoral-level Holmes Scholars to submit a proposal for the 2019 AACTE Holmes Scholars Dissertation Funding Competition (DFC). The competition will take place 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 22, during the Holmes Preconference Meeting at the Louisville Marriott Downtown in Louisville, KY.

The purpose of the DFC is to defray expenses of a Holmes Scholar’s doctoral research project. This funding competition helps take Holmes Scholars to the next level and provides a collegial and competitive space. This experience is designed to enhance Scholars’ competitiveness as they prepare to enter the job market.

The DCF provides scholars an opportunity to present their work in a creative and compelling way.  Awards will be given to the top three presentations. The first-place awardee will receive $3,000, the second-place winner will receive $1,250, and the third-place winner will receive $750. This competition is made possible with the financial support of AACTE and NAHSA.

How it Works

The DFC will include no more than five participants with each delivering a five-minute presentation. All Holmes members are invited to watch participants present their work.

Each Scholar’s presentation will be reviewed by a judging panel using a rubric to evaluate the presentation. The rubric will be provided to each participant in late January. The panel will comprise one current Holmes Council member, one Holmes Alumni/NAHSA member, and one member of the AACTE Diversity Teacher Workforce Topical Action Group. Judges cannot be affiliated with one of the competitor’s institutions.

How to Submit Your Abstract

A doctoral-level Holmes Scholar in the pre-data collection phase of their dissertation is eligible to submit a 500-word abstract and budget to Research Coordinator Temi Adeoye at adeoye@purdue.edu by January 4, 2019. The submissions will de-identified and proposals will be distributed to the Holmes Council for initial review. All submissions will undergo a blind review by the Council president, vice-president, and general alternate. Scholars who submit a proposal will be notified of the finalists selected for the DFC no later than January 18, 2019, at which time finalists will receive competition guidelines for the presentation.
