The AACTE Committee on Global Diversity will host a premier symposium a day before the 2018 AACTE Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. The free preconference event, “A Global Lens to Educator Preparation: Shared Knowledge and Advocacy for Diverse and Multicultural Perspectives,” will be held Wednesday, February 28, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and includes breakfast and a keynote luncheon. Please sign up to join us!

The committee developed this daylong event for educators from around the world in higher education and the PK-12 community to discuss and share best practices related to curricula, diverse experiences, and partnerships between educator preparation programs and school districts. Participants will explore opportunities for infusing a global focus in educator preparation that includes diverse perspectives and multicultural experiences, beginning in the university classroom and moving through clinical practice.

At the morning sessions, selected past recipients of AACTE awards for multicultural education, diversity, and global perspectives will share best practices as well as innovative experiences and partnerships that prepare mindful teacher candidates who advocate for multicultural education and diverse global perspectives in the classroom.

The committee partnered with the AACTE Internationalization of Teacher Education Topical Action Group to plan the afternoon session. Panelists will facilitate discussions about strategies, programs, and school-university partnerships in which educators implement globalism/internationalization within their educator preparation programs, curricula, and practices with the goal to equip and guide contextually responsive educators.

Moderators for the day include Socorro Herrera (Kansas State University) and Shane Martin (Loyola Marymount University, CA). The keynote speakers for the lunch are Reyes Quezada (University of San Diego, CA) and James O’Meara (International Council on Education for Teaching).

We encourage you to bring PK-12, global, or community partners who are interested in diversity, multicultural education, and global/international practices. Although the event is free, space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. All participants must register to ensure adequate seating and food service.

If you have questions about this committee’s preconference, please contact Amanda Lester at alester@aacte.org. For more information about all preconference events at the AACTE Annual Meeting, see this overview article.
