Thinking of Applying for an AACTE Award? Hear From a Recent Winner

Just 2 weeks remain before the application deadline for AACTE’s 2016 Best Practice Awards and Professional Achievement Awards. To illustrate the honor of receiving such recognition from your peers, we asked one recent recipient to tell us about her experience.

In 2014, AACTE recognized the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) at the University of San Diego with the AACTE Best Practice Award in Support of Global Diversity. Heather Lattimer, associate professor and associate dean of SOLES, said this about the honor.

The process of applying for the AACTE Best Practice Award in Support of Global Diversity provided us with the opportunity to reflect on our goals, assess our strengths and shortcomings, and consider how best to continue to grow and strengthen the work we do in SOLES. Receiving the award provided well-deserved recognition for our dean’s vision and our faculty’s dedication to preparing globally competent educators.

We have been able to expand and enhance the international experiences we offer to our teacher candidates—experiences that prepare them to develop globally conscious citizens in their own classrooms. Additionally, the award increased hiring opportunities for our graduates, attracted greater interest from prospective students and faculty with a commitment to global diversity, and opened new research collaborations and educational partnerships with internationally minded schools and community organizations.

The award affirmed and deepened SOLES’s commitment to strengthen our knowledge and understanding of issues of diversity, equity, and global perspectives and motivated our continued commitment to the professional development and scholarship of all faculty. The SOLES community is incredibly grateful for the award.

The AACTE Awards Program has been recognizing excellence in educator preparation for 20 years. Now is your chance to nominate your program or an outstanding individual to be recognized with an AACTE award. All entries will be reviewed by the AACTE standing committees, and winners will be recognized at the 2016 Annual Meeting, February 23–25 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Applications are due Friday, October 9, by midnight EDT.
