Last Call for AACTE Dissertation Award Applications

Time is running out to apply for AACTE’s 2016 Outstanding Dissertation Award! Entries must be made online by Monday, August 17. Help AACTE showcase outstanding doctoral research at your institution by encouraging your top recent graduates (or recent hires!) to apply for this prestigious award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize.

The Committee on Research and Dissemination, which oversees this award, is looking for doctoral dissertation research (or its equivalent) that contributes to the knowledge base of educator preparation or of teaching and learning with implications for educator preparation. Individuals earning a doctorate in education from January 1, 2014, through June 30, 2015, are eligible for the award. In addition to the cash prize, the winner will receive special recognition at AACTE’s 68th Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, February 23–25, 2016.

Recent winners have come from the University of Washington, University of Illinois at Chicago, Kansas State University, University of Miami (FL), Emory University (GA), and a variety of other institutions graduating these stellar scholars—many of whom have continued to excel in the field as they have moved into faculty and administrative roles.

A few notes for applicants:

  • Rather than collecting the dissertations themselves, we ask you to submit a 10-page narrative about your dissertation, answering specific questions about its design, findings, and implications. The only pieces we want from your original dissertation are the abstract, table of contents, and references. (If we need more information, we might request the complete dissertation later.)
  • To help us conduct a fair review, be sure to remove your identifying information from these documents.
  • You will need a letter of recommendation from your adviser, or at least from a member of your committee, so be sure to request that now if you have not already done so! (This letter can include your identifying information; AACTE’s committee members won’t look at it until they’ve completed their blind review.)

Learn more about this opportunity here, and feel free to direct questions to me at kmccabe@aacte.org.

Also remember: Submission for other AACTE awards is open as well! The deadline to apply for the 2016 Best Practice Awards and Professional Achievement Awards is Friday, October 9. See descriptions, selection criteria, and other details here.
