Meet the Chair: Julie Underwood

AACTE’s Board of Directors is headed this year by Julie Underwood, dean of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Underwood is a nationally recognized authority on school law and has coauthored several books on the topic. Her background includes work in higher education and at the National School Boards Association, where she served as associate executive director and general counsel from 1998 to 2005.

Before her stint in Washington, DC, Underwood was dean of the School of Education and Allied Professions at Miami University (OH) for 3 years. But the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been her home for most of her career.

In addition to being Wisconsin’s education dean since 2005, she has served as interim provost there. Her early career was also spent at Wisconsin, when she served from 1986 to 1995 on the Educational Administration faculty, as a department chair, as associate dean of the School of Education, and as codirector of the Wisconsin Center for Education Policy at the Robert M. La Follette Institute of Public Affairs.

For AACTE, Underwood leads meetings of the Board as well as of its Executive Committee, including a meeting in Washington this Friday on the heels of AACTE’s Washington Week. Click here to read her blog post capturing some of this week’s advocacy spirit.

Underwood holds a bachelor’s degree from DePauw University (IN), a law degree from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of Florida.
